Welcome to the TTRPG-Hangout!
Welcome to the Tabletop RolePlaying Games Hangout where we focus on playing in homebrew worlds of our own making, especially sandboxes - worlds where players are free to do what they want while the world evolves around them. This style of play works well in most types of roleplaying games, and is especially common in OSR and NSR games.
Prepping the game
- The Prep Pool - How to be Ready for Anything helps you as a Game Master to prepare for when the players do the unexpected.
- Creating an NPC with Tarot explains how a simple Tarot deck can be used to inspire the creation of an NPC.
- Tarot Adventure Prep shows you how to use a slightly more complex Tarot spread to spawn entire adventure ideas for group or solo play.
Content generators
- 2d6 Hexmap Generation System helps you create a simple hex map.
- Location Generator for when you don't know what to put in your empty hexes.
- 2d6 Weather System uses a context-aware random table to generate simple weather on the fly or in advance.
- Context-aware Random Tables explains how to make random tables with guided randomness.
- The 4D Method of NPC Creation explains how to quickly make a simple but memorable NPC
- NPC Generator is a rather detailed generator for creating NPC personalities, agendas, and appearances.
Mostly for Solo play
Most of the articles above are suitable for Solo as well as Group play, but in this section we focus on things that make the most sense in Solo play.
- Why Play Roleplaying Games Alone explores the point of SoloRPGs.
Oracles
Who answers questions you would normally ask the Game Master when you're playing without one?
- Yes/No Oracle can be used to answer any yes/no question you would ask your GM in a group game, and the answer might be superseded by a random event.
- Action/Theme Oracle is a useful tool for all sorts of things in solo play.
- Reaction rolls allow you to randomize reactions from NPC within certain boundaries.
- Quantity Oracle is for when you don't know how big something is, or how many of it there are, and so on.
Systems for assisting Solo play
Sometimes it helps to complement your game's rules with systems tailored for Solo play.
- Evolving NPC Personality and Love System will allow your PCs to get to know NPCs over time, and perhaps even find love?
- D12 Tension System helps you make your world a bit more dynamic, by adding mechanics for keeping track of "Tension" - the current danger level.
- D12 Dungeon Crawl System employs the D12 Tension System to make dungeon crawling more dynamic.
Software tools for Solo play
- Solo-RPG-mode for Emacs shows you how to play solo roleplaying games within the highly capable Emacs text editor.
